Acute carbon monoxide poisoning with coexisting cerebral and myocardial infarction: The brain-heart connection and challenges of management in resource-limited settings Acta Toxicol. Argent.
Oghuvwu,Sunday Omokiniovo; Isah,Ambrose Ohumagho; Opadeyi,Abimbola; Ayinbuomwan,Stephen A.
Carbon monoxide poisoning pose significant public health consequence and management can be challenging in resource-poor countries. This is a commentary of a 40 year-old farmer with a five day history of loss of consciousness following overnight inhalation of carbon monoxide. Neuroimaging and electrophysiologic studies showed bilateral internal capsule and myocardial infarction. He had unsuccessful treatment with normobaric oxygen therapy in the absence of hyperbaric oxygen. This case depicts the brain-heart connection in carbon monoxide poisoning and highlights the challenges of management in a resource poor setting.

ASPECTOS TEÓRICOS E PRÁTICOS ASSOCIADOS À DECISÃO DE USO DE AGROTÓXICOS: UMA ABORDAGEM INTEGRADA ENTRE A AGRICULTURA, MEIO AMBIENTE E SAÚDE PÚBLICA. AgEcon
Soares, Wagner Lopes; Porto, Marcelo Firpo De Souza.

Clinical and electrocardiographic evaluation during experimental toad poisoning in dogs J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Camplesi,AC; Sakate,M; Simão,NMB; Marucio,R; Mota,FCD; Moya-Araujo,CF.
Accidents involving toad poisoning are frequent and dogs are the most common victims; they become poisoned by biting or ingesting a toad. When released in the organism, the venom is absorbed by both the oral mucosa and the digestive tract, initiating its toxic action. The aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical and electrocardiographic aspects of dogs subjected to experimental toad poisoning, as well as their response to treatment with propranolol. Twenty dogs were divided into two groups, a control group (n = 5) and a poisoned group (n = 15). After general anesthesia, the control group received a placebo, while the poisoned group received a venom aliquot through an orogastric tube. Results were tested through multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). The...

Determinação de agrotóxicos e ocratoxina A em café arábica sob diferentes níveis de torrefação. Infoteca-e

Effects of milk from goat fed Crotalaria spectabilis seeds on growing rats Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
MEDEIROS,Rosane Maria Trindade de; GÓRNIAK,Silvana Lima; GUERRA,José Luis.
Seeds of Crotalaria spectabilis, containing the pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) monocrotaline (MCT), were fed to a lactating dairy goat. Milk from this goat was fed to rats for 8 weeks to determine whether MCT or its toxic metabolites are transferred into the goat’s milk. Rats from the experimental group showed significantly higher (p<0.05) serum levels of ALT, AST, GGT and LDH and less weight gains (p<0.05) than control rats. The most significant lesions in rats consuming the experimental ration were mild to moderate interstitial pneumonia and a vacuolar degeneration and occasionally necrosis of periportal hepatocytes. The results of this study indicate that the PA and/or its metabolites are eliminated in milk.

Envenomation by scorpion in dog: case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Cardoso,M. J. L.; Sakate,M.; Ciampolini,P.; Moutinho,F. Q.; Cherubini,A. L..
A case admitted at the Small Animals Clinics Service, Veterinary Hospital, FMVZ - UNESP, in May, 1999 is described. A Brazilian Terrier dog, 3 years and 3 months old, weighing 1.7 kg was brought after 2 hours and a half from contact with a scorpion (Tityus bahiensis). The dog showed vocalization inserted with drowsiness. Physical examination showed slightly hyperemic mucous, pain, agressiveness, tachypnea, tachycardia, and discrete erythema on the right forelimb palmar face. An anesthetic block was performed around the stung area using 2% lidocaine hydrochloride without vasoconstrictor (10mL). The animal was asymptomatic, after 24 h treatment.

Euscorpius (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae): three cases of stings in northwestern Italy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dutto,M; Dutto,L; Scaglione,N; Bertero,M.
In the period between June 2008 and August 2009, three cases of stings of Euscorpius scorpions indigenous to Italy were treated at two different emergency departments (ED) in hospitals of the Piedmont region, northwest Italy: Santa Croce e Carle General Hospital in Cuneo, and Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Savigliano. Scorpion stings in Italy are rare and not well documented in the literature; this situation may raise doubts among medical personnel as to how such lesions are best treated. Analysis of the incidents confirms that the venom of Euscorpius do not provokes systemic poisoning in humans and in these cases even dermatological reactions were not significant.

Infiltrated plaques resulting from an injury caused by the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris): a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Haddad Jr,Vidal; Magalhães,Claudia Alves de.
Several species of octopus are considered venomous due to toxins present in the glands connected to their “beak”, which may be associated with hunt and kill of prey. Herein, we report an accident involving a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) that injured an instructor during a practical biology lesson and provoked an inflamed infiltrated plaque on the hand of the victim. The lesion was present for about three weeks and was treated with cold compresses and anti-inflammatory drugs. It was healed ten days after leaving a hyperchromic macule at the bite site. The probable cause of the severe inflammation was the digestive enzymes of the glands and not the neurotoxins of the venom.

Intoxications par animaux marins vénéneux à Madagascar (ichtyosarcotoxisme et chélonitoxisme): données épidémiologiques récentes. OceanDocs
Razafimahefa, N.; Champetier de Ribes, G.; Ranoivoson, G.; Rasolofonirina, R.N.; Rakotoson, J.D.; Rabeson, D..
If seafood poisonings are well documented in the Pacific region, they are not often reported in the Indian Ocean. In Madagascar, fishermen and people living in coastal areas are traditionally aware of seafood poi - sonings . Mass intoxications were described in the sixties, including lethal cases following sardine ingestion. From 1989 to 1993, 28 ichtyosarcotoxism cases, mainly ciguatera occurring in children, were reported in Tulear hospital . From July 1993 to May 1996, nine seafood poisoning outbreaks occurred in coastal villages after turtle, shark and sardine meals. Clinical symptoms were related to marine toxins. For turtle intoxications, gastro-intestinal symptoms are the most frequently seen (acute stomatitis, dysphagia, vomiting and diarrhea) ,...

Intoxikation durch marine Biotoxine ArchiMer
Hess, Philipp.
This paper presents a short summary of the knowledge on marine biotoxins. As toxins are known for their acute effects, they have been classified here according to the effects they cause in acute human poisoning incidents. Toxins may thus be distinguished into those that affect the nervous system (paralytic and other neurotoxins), memory (amnesic poisons), and the digestive system (diarrhetic toxins). Furthermore, newly emerging toxins, such as ciguatoxins or shark toxins, and factors that lead to the introduction of toxins in new areas, are presented. Relevant suggestions for further reading are given.

Lesions caused by Africanized honeybee stings in three cattle in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Caldas,Saulo Andrade; Graça,Flávio Augusto Soares; de Barros,Júlia Soares Monteiro; Rolim,Márcia Farias; Peixoto,Tiago da Cunha; Peixoto,Paulo Vargas.
We report three cases of stings by Africanized bees in cattle in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Erythema, subcutaneous edema, necrosis accompanied by skin detachment, and subsequent skin regeneration were observed, especially on the head and dewlap. Histopathological examinations performed 45 days later revealed complete skin reepithelialization with moderate dermal fibrosis. The clinical picture and differential diagnosis are discussed in the present manuscript, with a focus on photosensitization, which causes cutaneous lesions on the head (sequela) with cicatricial curving of the ears and can be very similar to what is observed in cattle attacked by swarms of bees. The distinction between photosensitization and bee sting lesions can be made with a...

Rhododendron simsii poisoning in goats in Southern Brazil Ciência Rural
Vargas Junior,Sérgio Farias; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Halinski-Silveira,Dênis; Grecco,Fabiane Borelli; Raffi,Margarida Buss; Schild,Ana Lucia; Sallis,Eliza Simone Viégas.
This study describes the natural poisoning of goats by Rhododendron simsii in Southern Brazil. Five of eight goats died after ingesting branches of plants, which were pruned and placed near the goats. Clinical signs observed were restlessness, shrill bleating, profuse regurgitation, looking and kicking at the flank, a loss of balance, irregular gait, staggering, and opisthotonos. At necropsy or histopathology affected goats had not showed lesions. Two goats were fed with 21.5g kg-1 bw and 30g kg-1 bw of fresh leaves of R. simsii. Both goats developed signs similar to those naturally affected goats. These findings indicated that R. simsii is highly toxic and lethal to goats.

Toad poisoning in three dogs: case reports J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Barbosa,CM; Medeiros,MS; Riani Costa,CCM; Camplesi,AC; Sakate,M..
Toad poisoning is frequent in dogs, but has been infrequently addressed in published case reports and review articles. Dogs can be poisoned when they bite a toad or otherwise ingest the venom. The venom effects manifest soon after the accident, since the toxin is rapidly absorbed by the mucous membrane of the digestive system. Hospital records of three dogs, diagnosed with toad poisoning, were retrospectively reviewed from January 2005 to July 2007. Poisoned dogs may present only local irritation or systemic signs in the gastrointestinal, cardiac and neurological systems. All three cases presented herein had clinical signs of gastrointestinal alterations including vomiting, sialorrhea and diarrhea. Two dogs developed abnormal cardiac rhythm and two...
